Our Story
The gap that
demanded
a response.
Uttar Pradesh is home to over 240 million people — more than Brazil. It has one of the highest burdens of preventable disease in South Asia. And until BMIIL, it had no dedicated medtech incubation infrastructure of any kind.
The founding idea was simple and urgent: Bareilly International University already has the hospitals, the labs, the students, and the faculty. What it lacked was a structured system to convert clinical observations into startups.

BMIIL was built to be that bridge. Not a generic startup hub with a healthcare vertical — but a deeply clinical institution where the problem always comes before the product, and the patient always comes before the pitch.
Situated within BIU's campus in Bareilly, we have direct access to a multi-speciality teaching hospital, specialised research laboratories, and a multidisciplinary faculty — giving our startups infrastructure that most metro incubators cannot offer at any price.
Journey So Far
Dr. Varun Agarwal and Claudius Lazarus identify the gap in Tier-2 India's healthcare innovation infrastructure. Initial conversations with Bareilly International University begin.
Entity incorporated. Hosting agreement signed with BIU. First grant applications submitted. Core team begins forming around the founding vision.
First grant approvals received. Letters of intent signed with key partners. Mentor network assembled. Infrastructure setup underway on BIU campus.
First cohort of 10–12 startups across Medtech Incubation, Accelerator, and Ayush tracks. Demo Day and first investor introductions planned for end of year.
Second cohort launches. Framework for replicating the BMIIL model with partner universities across North India.

India has 800+ universities outside its metro cities. The majority sit adjacent to district hospitals, have pharmacy and biotech facilities, and are surrounded by communities with unmet healthcare needs.
BMIIL's Bareilly unit is designed to prove — rigorously and publicly — that a clinically-grounded medtech incubator can be built, funded, and sustained in Tier-2 India.
The long-term vision is a national network of BMIIL-model centres, each anchored to a university with clinical infrastructure, each generating a pipeline of locally relevant healthcare startups.
